As with all adaptations, a little healthy skepticism never hurt. I haven't read the book, but I can only imagine the differences between the two. As for MDR, I found Jung arrogant in that he looked on his childhood and dreams with seasoned psychoanalytic eyes, analyzing himself without taking his childhood naivite into account.

I'm curious as to why you felt Jung showed arrogance in MDR.
I've been reading A Most Dangerous Method and I'm a bit nervous to see the movie given how good the book is and how movies often don't live up to the experience of the book. From what I've read in the book, I don't see how Spielrein couldn't have influenced Jung's view on the anima/animus in an important way. Also, it seems like the relationship was an important initiatory experience for Jung, probably helped destroy some illusions about himself and, this is pure speculation, helped him to let go of his need for a father figure in Freud.

I'm really looking forward to this movie.

Thanks for the summary and musings.

I remember one teacher trying to explain why Freud gets so much more attention than Jung, especially when we have, in a sense, debunked almost everything of Freud's while we still use and develop much of Jung's work. He said, "Freud has two advantages. He came first, and he gave us a really interesting story."

Maybe this movie will help cast some light on just how rich Jung's 'narrative' really can be.

Regarding - “The Dude Abides”: I like what you wrote. Its a little deep for someone not well verse in the works sited, but its still written well enough for the unenlightened such as myself. For some reason after my bout with a cancer "The Dude" has been more on my mind. I have not gotten far enough to adopt the total need for acceptance by way of dress, but I had shed the need to dress for others (except for work and out of respect). For me I would like to find at least a serenity similar what he shows. I am currently starting a book written by Tom Laughlin on how our negative side and stress prevent us from healing cancer naturally. Tom has done some extensive work on Jung and used this in healing a cancer of his own. While I don't think the Dude is a cancer cure, we would certain have a much less hostile/stressful life it we were surrounded by his followers ;-) Thanks for the read, the thoughts, ideas, and posting this. While Im not a drinker, I did try my first White Russian and I think this also perhaps helps the Dude cope. lol However, I have never seen a pot smoker beat the tar out of anyone, and I think it would help many both physically and spirituality should it become legal. Personally, I think every lawmaker should smoke. ;-) Perhaps then they would see the idiocy of making people better by pass laws. Doesn't work, never will. They just make more felons from good people. :-(
